The situation appears to be a little calmer in and around Kisumu with less violence between crowds and police, although the atmosphere remains very tense.

We managed to get food supplies to the Vima children yesterday who are safe and doing ok. However, in Kondele where they live we have had reports of a gathering of around 6,000 people fleeing their homes now seeking refuge in the police compound. Still no official word on the street children but we believe that many of the older children in particular have been involved in much of the violence. We have heard from Port Florence, Omega and Hovic staff who are all safe but extremely anxious.

Politically there seems to be little room to manoeuvre at present with the government not willing to alter its position and the opposition not willing to drop claims of electoral fraud. The western media is keen that there should be negotiations but wonders what, if they came face to face, there would be to negotiate. With increasing concern about the developing humanitarian crisis facing people in an around Kisumu we will be planning a response in the coming days.
